Why Aikido?

The Founder of Aikido. Morihei Ueshiba, 1883 - 1969.

A Long and Proud Tradition

Aikido is a powerful method of self protection that can be studied by men and women of all ages, and is widely taught to the police and armed forces across the world. It is based on turning and spinning movements which seek to redirect the force of the attack into the ground or back through the attacker, culminating in an immobilisation or projection.

The art of Aikido is unique in the martial world as it is not only a purely defensive art, but also aims to cause no serious injury to the attacker, whilst maintaining the safety of the defender. It is this moral approach that has been the identifying characteristic of Aikido as it has spread throughout the the world.

The underlying defensive principles of Aikido make it ideal for the less physical to learn as a method of self defence, though there are many other benefits to the practitioner as training progresses, namely:

Improved level of fitness

New self confidence

Relaxation / Stress Relief

Self Awareness

Co-ordination

The friendly environment of the Aikido Dojo makes learning this fantastic Art a great way to meet new people and make friends.
